The Division Varsity Baseball Team was seeded eighth this year in the county tournament, and drew first seeded MacArthur. In the first game, junior Scott Porter was the starting pitcher and did a commendable job, only to lose 4-1. Sophomore Kevin Gerard and senior Ryan O'Shea provided some outstanding short relief pitching in this game. Division pitchers scattered six MacArthur hits.
Offensively Scott Porter, and another junior Brian Frers led Division, as both of them banged out two hits apiece. Division had several big scoring opportunities, but let them slip away.
In the second round of the tournament, Division played Locust Valley who had beaten Bethpage the previous day. Junior Jesse Darcy was on the hill for Division, and had total control of the game allowing only three hits while striking out 19 batters to set the school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game. The old record of 18, was set on back-to-back days during the 1998 baseball season. Chris Flinn, presently pitching for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, struck out 18 batters against Carey on one day, and then the very next day Mike Pelcher presently pitching for the University of Delaware, did it the very next day. The single game record is held by Jim Chenevey (who went to Harvard, and was later a fifth round draft choice of the Oakland Athletics) who struck out 25 batters in an 11 inning game in the county championship series, in 1983.
The Division offense was led by junior Ray Montoro, who blasted two doubles, and had three RBIs. Junior Brian Frers also had two RBIs, while sophomore Brian Chenicek added a big RBI hit as did Jeff Tamarez.
In game three Division played a thrilling 10-inning game with Josh Flinn going the distance allowing only four hits with three of them coming in the third inning. Josh also struck out 13 Warrior batters.
Keith Feldman was Division's big gun with three hits and three RBIs. Jeff Tamarez had two hits, while Tom Messina scored two runs. Brian Frers also hit a solo homer for Division.
Round four brought the Dragons back to MacArthur again for the second time in four days. The Dragons dropped this game by a 6-0 score, as MacArthur pitcher Dan Horvatt pitched a commanding one-hitter. Division's only hit came off the bat of sophomore shortstop Dan Cooley. Once again Brian Frers excelled defensively at third for Division.
The Dragons finished the season with a record of 19 wins, five losses, and one tie. The coaching staff is very proud of the accomplishments of this year's team, and along with its players they wish MacArthur good luck in the county Championship Series.
