The Varsity Baseball Club finished off the regular season with a 17-1 victory over the Manhasset Indians. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-4-2 and the league title. Island trees was led by an outstanding effort by John Zarelli, he tossed a complete game 2-hitter, striking out 16, while walking none. Manhasset was under siege all week by Island Trees hitters. Greg Thomson hit two more bombs, increasing his county lead to 10. Chauncey Garcia continues to stay hot, going three for five, while Matt Ostrowski went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and another homer. The Thompson brothers (Mike and Anthony) went a combined 5 for 10 on the day. Tony Rinaldi went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. The day was capped off by a huge solo homerun by Daniel Sullivan. At the County Seeding meeting, Island Trees was placed with number six seed and will play arch-rival, the Clarke Rams, in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs also garnered seven county player awards. They are as follows: All-County - Greg Thomson, Mike Thompson and Matt Ostrowski. All Conference - Chauncey Garcia, Anthony Thompson and John Zarrelli. All League - Anthony Rinaldo. League BV MVP - Greg Thomson. Congratulations to all of these fine young gentlemen and to the whole Island Trees Baseball Club. Good luck to all of them as they continue to run down a dream.
The Lady Dawgs had another great, record breaking week. The first game was a chance to prove that the Lady Bulldogs didn't like losing the first time these two teams met. A great pitching performance by senior, Chrissy DeMott and a few clutch hits were just what the Bulldogs needed. Fifteen strikeouts and a clutch 2-run double by seventh-grader Beth Hughes, proved to be the difference. Final score Island Trees 5, Glen Cove 1. Next up was a visit from the Lady Bulldogs of Roslyn. Chrissy DeMott had a total of 20 strikeouts, breaking a record held by another outstanding pitcher from Island Trees, Jamie Pietrantoni, who struck out 18 in a game two seasons ago. DeMott gave up just two hits. The Lady Dawgs broke out for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, when senior, Liz Dinolfo, led off with a walk. Junior, Corinne Vinberg, singled and Chrissy DeMott had a 2-run triple, followed by a RBI single by Beth Hughes, who later scored on a RBI single by Naji Barajas, her first of the season, Final score Island trees 6, Roslyn 0. Finally, a visit from the Seaford Vikings. It was an exciting day and a personal best for Chrissy DeMott by surpassing last year's season total for strikeouts of 201 by adding another 8, giving her a total to date of 205. Some great bunts by Liz Dinolfo and Corinne Vinberg followed by singles by Chrissy Demott and Becky Santoriello was key when Beth Hughes stepped up and drilled a ball in the gap for her second homerun of the season, to give her 15 RBIs to date. Some great defense by third baseman, Erin Dodge and left fielder, Corinne Vinberg, kept the game close. The Vikings of Seaford hung on to keep it close, but DeMott struck out the last two batters to end the threat. Final score Bulldogs 5. Vikings 4. Next up will be a great game against Valley Stream South where it will be Senior Day at Island Trees. Seniors Chrissy DeMott and Loz Dinolfo will be honored for their outstanding dedication to the great softball program of Island Trees.
The Island Trees Lacrosse Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker, 7-6, to Salk. The game went back and forth the whole time, including a last second shot that just went wide. Offensively, Kevin Kilfoil and John Oliveri had their best output of the year. They scored two goals each. The defense was led by Billy Lewis, Joe Ciaravino and Santi Agudelo. Great job Bulldogs!
The seventh-grade softball team defeated Merrick Ave. by a score of 13-8 to improve their record to 2-2. The Lady Dawgs jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first inning and added four runs in the last inning to ensure the victory. Joann Cataldo led the offensive outburst, going 4 for 4 on the day with two long homeruns, two doubles and seven RBI's She also pitched a complete game, striking out nine hitters. Melanie McGurk contributed three hits, including a double and two runs scored. Taylor Burger had a double, single and two runs scored. Marissa Giambelluca had two hits and a run scored and Lauren Grecsek also had two hits on the day. Christine Verbitsky contributed two nice defensive plays, two hits and two runs scored. Martina Sinisi and Vanessa Attard continued their excellent defensive play at catcher, with Vanessa throwing out her first base stealer of the season in the third. Alyssa Saracino and Christine Smith each contributed a hit and a run scored.
The Island Trees eighth-grade baseball Bulldogs had their first win of the season against the Plainview Warriors. The Bulldogs had a spectacular begining. In the first inning, the Bulldogs scored nine runs and batted around the order 1 1/2 times. Peter Marchelos had a huge double that brought in some runs. PJ Dellacroce extended his hitting streak to five. He also had two stolen bases. Cole D'Ambrosio had two stolen bases during the game and went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. In the next inning, Justin Muscarella came up to the plate and ended his hitting slump with a bomb over the center fielder's head. During the fourth, Bryan Dreyfus had a single over the center fielder's head and another bomb later on in the game over the left fielder's head. He went 2 for 2 during the game. Mike Sculman hit a blooper into right field for a single. Frank Miscioscia hit a really far shot over the center fielder's head to advance Matt Zino from first all the way to third. Matt had two long drive hits. The Bulldogs defense was spectacular. Matt Valinoti behind the plate with a very good diving swipe that saved a run. Matt Acton also behind the plate with a very good throw from home to second to get an out. Justin Muscarella with great backup at short stop that saved a base hit and he had a spectacular throw. Kris Kellam had a spectacular day on the mound. He only let up three hits and walked two. Later in the sixth, Steve Perkowski came in and pitched a two inning no hitter. He had one strike-out. Other players that worked hard in the field were Bill Ferro, Tim Dwyer, Brian Balvin, Matt Zino, Mike Schulman and Matt Clarke.
Great job to the seventh and eighth-grade track team on their third place finish at Plainview. Awesome times were run by Julio Fuentes, first in the 100 and 200-meter races. Also, Mike Shearer, Kyle Ray, Shannon Lebosky, Elyse Aguirre, Don Ascoli, Kaitlin Moore and Michelle Meyer had a great day. Excellent job to the whole team.
