Jim Morrow, president, called the meeting to order at 7:33 p.m. Minutes from March were read and approved. Twenty-five people were in attendance.
Jim, commenting on Dr. Sirois' presentation at the March meeting, said that 100 percent of Levittown students are now taking regents, but this is a state requirement. Gary Fisch said that only 55 percent is a passing regents grade and questioned Levittown's percent of students taking AP courses. Levittown meeting Nassau County average does not mean the mean average. Dr. Sirois' truth is different from ours. Members questioned population enrollment changes. We discussed population increases (spikes) and public vs. parochial enrollments.
Treasurer Report: 83 member families; approximately $900 in checking account.
We discussed our upcoming dinner in June at Portofino restaurant (Waldbaum's shopping center). The menu will be: soup or salad, pasta entrée (choice of fish, veal or chicken), vegetable, dessert, unlimited soda, coffee - $25 per person, including tax and gratuity. LPOA will get a private room which is limited to 60 people (20 minimum). Motion was made to change June 11 meeting to June 12 and have the meeting and dinner together. Motion approved. Daphne will advise the library.
Jim read a letter from the Board of Zoning Appeals, re: barber shop at 1 Amber Lane. Does the owner reside in West Hempstead or Levittown? Daphne called the town attorney. Hearing was on March 20. Pasquale Murale's application modification was denied. Letter from John Quinn re: violations and that LPOA should push for closing the barber shop. Jean Towell suggested we call Mr. Santino for help.
New Business: Letter saying Ford, GM, and Chrysler donated to 9/11 Relief Fund. Foreign companies gave nothing. Consider this when buying your next car. Discussed whether this is true or not.
Explained fence law LPOA is trying to get passed. Six foot fence would be allowed in back and sides to the front of original house line; forward of the house or sides and front; open four foot fence allowed. We expect this to be approved by the town board shortly.
Jean Towell moved for meeting to be adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Motion approved.
