The MacArthur Generals Varsity Baseball Team has completed their season in impressive fashion once again after a three game sweep of the New Hyde Park Gladiators. The Generals stand alone atop Nassau County's League B-I with a record of 16-1, and will enter the playoffs as one of the top seeded teams in the Class B tournament.

In the first game of the series against New Hyde Park, the Generals scored four runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Dan Horvat (.483, 23 RBIs) and Frank Virga (.482, 26 RBIs), en route to a 12-2 victory. New Hyde Park held MacArthur to only one more run until the sixth, when they exploded for seven more runs, highlighted by an RBI double by Chris Sipp (.402, 26 RBIs). Junior's Mike Ackerman (.333) and Adnan Kharaman followed with hits to open the game up. On the mound, Senior Captain Jason McCorry (6-0, 0.76 ERA) tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Game two was much tighter, but the Generals prevailed 5-1, behind the strong pitching of Horvat. Dan scattered four hits while striking out seven Gladiators. Frank Virga continued his hot hitting going 2-3 with two RBIs.

In the third and final game of the series MacArthur jumped out to an early lead of 10-0, after only four innings. Senior Captain Andrew Wachtel (3-3, 2 RBIs) and sophomore catcher Nick Manfredo (2-2, 2 RBIs) were the hitting stars and junior pitcher Tom Orbon did the job on the mount. Orbon limited New Hyde Park to just three hits through six innings and improved his record to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 0.72.

This week the Generals start the extremely competitive Nassau County Class B playoff tournament. With outstanding teams like Island Trees (2001 Champ), Garden City (2000 Champ), Division (1999 Champ), and Wantagh (1998 Champ), MacArthur will need to play outstanding baseball to win it all. Come down and support your favorite team.
