After living in Levittown/Wantagh for the past 31 years I've pretty much seen it all, heard it all, saw it all but tonight was a real surprise. I went to pick up my daughter, Katie (a volunteer), at Salk Junior High School tonight where the 12th Annual Senior Citizen Prom was being held. I peeked inside and was mesmerized! There, under a huge canopy used to disguise the aura of a gymnasium, and with soft gentle lighting, were 225 men and women dancing, laughing, talking, eating, and having a grand old time!! With live music provided by Ron James Entertainment, food catered by the LEMS culinary dept., the "New York, New York" backdrop provided by the high school students, the Key Club and Builders Club members acting as waiters and waitresses (and occasional dance partners!), and under the guidance of Jackie Levine it was a joy to watch!

You entered the gym by passing over a lit Brooklyn Bridge with the Statue of Liberty greeting you. There was a replication of Rockefeller Center, complete with the waterfall and the golden statue of Atlas, along with the flashing lights of Broadway! There were women chattering outside the girls' room (some things never change!), couples grabbing a quick smoke outside the building, and people leaning against the parked cars outside talking quietly. It was truly special to watch.

Congratulations to the custodial staff of six who put in almost 40 hours setting up and taking down everything; to the youth of our community who set it up and made it happen; to the school district volunteers who put in countless hours to guide it to fruition. And, to the donors of some 30 outstanding prizes: Wantagh Inn, King Kullen, Kohl's, Blockbuster, Loews, Old Country Buffet, Zorn's, Applebees, Cherrywood Cafe, Portofino, Chili's, Division Ave. Deli, Salon Monage, Blockbuster and especially to the LMEC students who donated an Adirondack chair, automotive services, print shop gift certificate, and floral arrangement. The grand prize was an overnight trip to the Tropicana in Atlantic City! You all deserve to take a bow . . . it was extraordinary to watch; I can only imagine what it was like to go "to the prom!"
