This year for Christmas my husband decided to surprise me with a car. He kept it at a friend's house to hide it from me and put a big bow on it before giving it to me. I was very surprised. At the end of March, we had taken our cat to the vet and when we went to pick him up, we had arrived early and decided to drive around. We passed a place called "Our Lady of the Island" and decided to go in and see what was around. Since we always carry a disposable camera, my husband got out of the car and took some pictures of The Pieta and a book depicting the statue's history. After we left, we put the camera back in the glove compartment and forgot about it.
On April 26 at about 8:30 p.m., my husband went out to pick up pizza on Gardiners Avenue. He was in the turning lane by the post office and a hit- and run-driver plowed into the back of the car exposing the chassis and pushing the car into a pole and post office truck. My husband was taken to the hospital by the Levittown Fire Department. His injuries consisted of a cut on his head and hands and the largest black- and blue-mark I ever did see on his right leg.
On April 29, he went to look at the car. He must have taken the camera out of the glove compartment and taken pictures of the damage done to the car. He took the pictures to be developed and then handed them to me. As I opened them, I was amazed at how much damage was done to my car and amazed at how lucky we were that my husband was alive. Then, must to my astonishment, I saw the pictures of The Pieta and the big book; I am not a Roman Catholic, but I know somebody was watching over my husband that night.
