Back when plans were underway to construct a Target Greatland in the Island Trees vicinity of Levittown, on the corner of Wantagh Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike, additional plans were in the works to construct some retail stores closer to the corner of the two roads, in the same area as Target. In recent months, plans have changed, and local residents who have driven by the site have surely noticed that construction has been taking place over the last several weeks. The land, once the site for a set of retail stores, is now scheduled to be occupied by a popular supermarket.
Plans are still under review, but the new store, scheduled to open this fall, will be a Super Stop & Shop, a fully equipped grocery store featuring several departments such as a florist, bakery, seafood, extended deli, health and beauty and natural foods. The original supermarket planned to be constructed at the site was a Shop Rite, but sometime between September of 1999, when Shop Rite applied for the permit to construct their facility, and recent months, plans were altered and Stop & Shop became the expected tenant of the property.
The 60,000 square foot supermarket is in the process of being built and plans to open sometime this fall. Hours of operation are still in discussion and a representative for the company said that it has not yet been determined whether the supermarket will be open 24 hours or other times.
When plans for Target Greatland were first underway, much concern was raised regarding the entrances and exits into the store's parking lot. In all probability, truck routes and entrances and exits will remain the same, with the entrance from Wantagh Avenue being a right turn only, the exit onto Wantagh Avenue being a right turn only, two left hand turning lanes on Hempstead Turnpike (coming from the east) and a right hand entrance coming from the west. These traffic patterns were designed with the safety of local residents in mind, particularly students who attend Island Trees Middle School, which borders the property.
With this new Stop & Shop location coming to town, there has been talk that either the Stop & Shop located on the corner of Newbridge Road (Route 106) and Hempstead Turnpike or the one on the corner of Route 107 and Hempstead Tpke. is scheduled to be closing. According to the corporation, it has not, as of yet, been determined if either location will be closed.
