The Levittown Community Council (LCC) recently announced the winners in the Annual Home for the Holidays Contest. This is the third year that the LCC has held this contest throughout the community, and according to LCC President Louise Cassano, it was harder than ever this year to select just one home from each quadrant.

Selections are based on nominations received from the community at large and from volunteer members of each selection committee. The community is set up into four quadrants; northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast. Captains of the selection committees for each quadrant included Joann Form (southwest), Mauro Cassano (northwest), Diane Shapiro (southeast) and Donna Ryan (northeast). Soon after Thanksgiving, when residents begin putting up their decorations, these captains and their team members navigate the neighborhood and look for decorated homes. Ultimately, each group decides on the one that they feel is best decorated.

"The winning selections seemed more difficult to decide this year since decorations were more abundant and more elaborate," Cassano said. "It appeared that people worked hard to include the American theme of red, white and blue into their holiday decorating and were very eager to show the spirit that America will overcome the tragedies it has experienced since Sept. 11."

The winners for 2001 were, in the southwest quadrant, 16 Quarry Lane; in the northwest quadrant, 78 Butternut Lane; in the southeast quadrant, 155 Sprucewood Drive and in the northeast quadrant, 59 Barrister Road.

Cassano, who initiated this contest three years ago, said that the LCC is proud to acknowledge the community and residents' efforts in decorating their homes.

"We would like to thank all of the people who took the time to nominate a home. Everyone of the nominations was viewed by committee members, who all remarked at how difficult it was to make choices."

Cassano explained that the LCC is an association of organizations and residents in the Levittown community and surrounding areas, whose primary purpose is to create unity and pride in the community. Residents may apply for individual or family membership at $10 or $15 a year. Organizations may join for $50 a year. For more information about the council, contact Louise Cassano at 735-5901 or write to Levittown Community Council, PO Box 294, Levittown, NY 11756.
