As the holidays approach we find Ashley Rogala and Christina Buckley coming off very successful fall seasons and about to dive into the winter season. Rogala and Buckley each play three sports for Division Avenue High School. Rogala plays volleyball, basketball and softball, while Buckley plays soccer, basketball and lacrosse. Both girls are juniors who have above 90 percent grade point averages.
Rogala led the Girls' Volleyball Team to one of its best seasons in quite some time and was selected to the All-Conference Team. Buckley was the starting left midfielder for the Girls' Soccer Team and was a major reason for that team making the playoffs.
As successful as they were in the fall they could hardly wait for the Hoops Season to start. Both girls would normally be called point guards because of their ability to handle the ball. Buckley leads the team in assists and Rogala leads the team in three-point baskets, hence Buckley is known as the point guard, while Rogala is the shooting guard.
Buckley has been widely touted as the best ball handler in Nassau County, while Rogala has honed a reputation as one of the toughest defenders around.
In the opening week of the basketball season the Lady Dragons won the Syosset Invitational Tournament. The girls beat Seaford 60-27 in the first round. Rogala led all scorers with 16 points and Buckley added 11 points and seven assists. In the championship game against host Syosset, Buckley had 18 points and Rogala had 17 points. Rogala was named to the All-Tournament Team and Buckley was voted MVP of the tournament.
Both girls hope to be considered for the All-County Team in basketball this year but neither girl will have time to dwell on this because both will jump right into their spring sports (where both are All-Star selections), as soon as hoops ends. The athletic awards these girls could collect by the time they graduate are mind-boggling. Christina Buckley and Ashley Rogala are truly girls for all seasons.
