By defeating Carey and host Cold Spring Harbor High Schools, the Division Avenue Varsity Boys basketball team captured the Cold Spring Harbor Tournament. This came after loosing a heartbreaking 75-74 game on a last second shot in overtime to The Oure School from Oure, Denmark.

The championship game found the Blue Dragons trailing by 3 points, 52-49 with 2 minutes left against Carey. Co-captain Brandon Rea hit a layup to close the deficit to 1, then scored again after getting a pass from Dan Hipp, giving Division the lead. The defense held Carey, and Jarrett Smith sealed the 55-52 victory by hitting 2 free throws with only 14 seconds left.

Point guard Dave Lineman captured MVP honors after leading the team with 17 points in the championship game, along with 7 steals. Smith wound up with 13 points and was also named to the all-tournament team. Junior Tom Davidson broke a school record by blocking 10 shots in the victory. The team held Carey's 6'6 high scorer, Bob Mostacci who had been averaging nearly 30 points per game, to only 14.

The Blue Dragons had to defeat host Cold Spring Harbor, 49-35 to get into the final. Rea's 6 first quarter points helped Division take an early 14-8 lead that it never relinquished. Rea and Hipp each had 10 points, but it was the "great team defensive effort," according to Coach Don Mackay that was responsible for the victory.

Mads Larson, the point guard for Oure hit a 3 point shot to tie the game in regulation. With his team trailing by 2 and the clock winding down, he hit another 3 pointer from 40 feet away with 2 defenders on him, just a the final buzzer sounded, ending the Danish team's visit to Long Island with a victory. Davidson led the Dragons with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Lineman had 11 points including 3 clutch three point shots late in the game to keep Division close.

Despite being seeded 8th in its conference, the Blue Dragons are optimistic as the season begins.

The Blue Dragons are bigger than in recent years. Joining returning seniors 6'2 Hipp and 6'3 David Kaiser are 6'8 Davidson and 6'4 senior football player Jim Siederman. Six foot senior Rami Hajjar and 6'2 junior Kevin Meekins can play inside or move outside.

The wing positions are strong with co-captains Rea and two year starter Mike O'Toole leading the way. Returning seniors Smith and Mike Delgado are expected to make big contributions along with junior Galo Polanco.

Supporting Lineman at the point guard position, are leading Junior Varsity scorer Rob Spauster and Mike Cosenza who can also play the wing position.

"We're deeper, bigger and more experienced than we've been in the last few years," said Coach Mackay, as the Blue Dragons attempt to improve on the 8th seed.

Top competitors will be last years' Class B champion, Jericho, Westbury, North Shore and last years' Class C champion Wheatley, who moves up a level. Bellmore JFK, West Hempstead, Clarke, Garden City and Plainedge will also be challenging for the top 5 playoff positions.
