The South Shore Indians 11-year-old baseball team completed their 2nd year of existence with an incredible run culminating in two tournament championships. The boys competed in the most difficult league available to them, the Federation Armature Baseball League, which is comprised of travel teams from all over Long Island. During regular season play, the boys tied for first place in the spring and took second in the summer session. Rather than defend their FABL title, the team opted to participate in the extremely challenging Nick Lamingello Tournament in Queens which pits some of the best teams from Long Island and Queens, and the annual Plainedge Tournament that many of the boys won as 8 year olds. The Indians breezed through the pool play round going perfect with a 4-0 record beating teams from New Hyde Park, HBQVB, Howard Beach and Long Beach. In remarkable come from behind victory in extra innings, the Indians beat a team from Bayside who had just successfully returned from a tournament in Illinois. The very next day, the team was embattled in the final of the prestigious Plainedge Tournament. Playing before an enthusiastic crowd against the hometown Red Devils the boys were once again embroiled in a nail bitter. Again the game went down to the wire with the Indians escaping with last inning heroics and their second championship in two days. The teams overall record was an impressive 44-17. This scrappy group of talented young boys found ways to win all yearlong as they matured and improved with every game. As the season would down their record over the final six weeks was an unbelievable 26-4. The pitching staff was extremely deep as eight different players contributed to the effort. Those achieving success from the mound were Michael Anarumo, John Crew, Andrew Faso, Eric Gonzalez, Tyler Hunter, Sean Nolin, Vincent Sanquini and Tyler Savin. Doing the bulk of the catching were Jonathan Rakitzis and Sean Nolin. The infield play all year was spectacular as the game takes on a different flavor with leading, stealing and pickoffs on a bigger field (75-foot bases and 51-foot mound). First base was anchored by Vincent Sanquini and Michael Anarumo while around the horn saw Tyler Savin at 2nd, Paul Manganiello at shortstop and Eric Gonzalez at third, with Tyler Hunter as a utility player. Solid outfield play was turned in by Sean Cox, Andrew Faso, Chris Rutiggliano, Ray Zdrodowski, Michael Anarumo and Vincent Sanquini. Playing on fields all season with fences this power hitting team has relied on the long ball from Andrew Faso, Eric Gonzalez, Paul Manganiello, Sean Nolin, Jonathan Rakitis and Tyler Savin. Timely hitting by Chris Ruttigliano, Ray Zdrodowski and Sean Cox helped the cause. Spraying the ball all over the field and utilizing their speed were Michael Anarumo and Vincent Sanquini. The team was coached by Vinny Sanquini, Gary Savin, John Anarumo, Nick Rakitis and stats by Hector Gonzalez.
This team has now been together for two years and has had a tremendous run of success with three tournament championships and over 70 victories. Special thanks to all of the parents and sponsors for their loyal support. Great things seem to be ahead for this group of talented young boys as they continue to learn and improve. Baseball in Levittown seems to be in good hands for many years ahead.
