On July 5, the Cantiague Park Senior Men's Golf League held its eighth bimonthly tournament. Players experienced a few drops of rain when they first started out but it stopped quickly and the sun soon came out to provide a better playing atmosphere. The league had the smallest group so far this year, only 21 golfers, and had only one birdie that day.
Local players of this day of play included Levittown residents Pete Fishbein, Don Gaynor, Ed Junginger, Clarence Leder, Jerry Leonard, Carl Lovgren, Ted Marukawa, and Wantagh resident Jack Smith.
On July 19, the league held its ninth bimonthly tournament. With a perfect golfing day weather wise, 26 men participated, making it the second highest number for the year. Local participants included Pete Fishbein, Don Gaynor, Ed Junginger, Peter Kerr, Clarence Leder, Jerry Leonard, Carl Lovgren, Ted Marukawa and Wantagh resident Jack Smith.
August 2 marked the league's 10th bimonthly tournament. The men experienced beautiful 87 degree weather with 23 golfers participating. The members of the Senior Men's Golf League wish to extend their thanks and appreciation to Pete Sharkey, head greens keeper at Cantiague, and his crew for the significant improvements to the Cantiague Golf Course. Sharkey's efforts and those of his crew have made golfing an increasingly pleasurable experience at Cantiague. Top local players of this game included Peter Kerr, who had the longest drive; Don Gaynor, who held Low Flight B; Pete Fishbein, Ed Junginger, Clarence Leder, Jerry Leonard, Carl Lovgren, Ted Marukawa and Jack Smith.
Competition on the nine hole course was divided into two divisions. Flight A is for players with a handicap of 11 or less and Flight B is for players with a handicap of 12 or more. The league is a 100 percent handicap league and is always looking for new members. Any man 55 or over is eligible. For more information call Lou Neumann at 681-2056.
