During the week of June 30, the Island Trees School District offered a softball sport camp. Under the direction of Varsity Softball Coaches Ed Price and Laurie Logan, girls in grades four through eight were offered 15 hours of instruction in all the fundamentals of softball. The girls worked on throwing, catching, stealing, bunting, pitching and fielding. Assisting Price and Logan were Jackie Habermehl and Chrissy DeMott who were catcher and pitcher for the IT Softball Team that recently captured the Nassau County championship.
During the week of July 9, the Island Trees School District offered two separate basketball sports camps. Girls in grades 9 through 12, under the direction of Varsity Coach Melissa Zamroz, were provided the opportunity to enhance their basketball skills.
Boys in grades four through eight were taught the basic fundamentals of passing, dribbling and shooting. Tom Baierlein, the men's varsity coach, and Mike Harrington, the JV coach, assisted by the Island Trees varsity basketball players, instructed the boys for the week.
The 75 campers who attended the boys camp reconfirms the fact that boys basketball is on the rise in Island Trees.
