Residents' favorite summer activities, including relaxation, a leisurely picnic in a shaded park and children playing games will come to life on Saturday, July 21 from noon to 6 p.m. when the Levittown Community Council holds the Fourth Annual Lazy Days of Summer Picnic at the Jerusalem Avenue Pool and Community Park at the East Village Green in Levittown.

"The purpose of this event, as it has been all along, is to promote community, to bring people together for some fun and entertainment and to celebrate one of the greatest aspects of living in Levittown, which is open park areas and our magnificent pools," said Louise Cassano, president of the Levittown Community Council.

The event, which is provided free by the council to residents of Levittown and the surrounding communities, is being chaired by Donna Ryan, first vice president of the Community Council. Ryan says the event has attracted between 200 to 250 people throughout the course of the day in previous years.

"Think of good, wholesome family fun and you'll have an idea of what this picnic is," said Ryan. "There will be entertainment throughout the day, a petting zoo and pony rides, face painting, games for toddlers and basketball competition for teens and adults. One of the local self-defense schools will be demonstrating and some of our community organizations will be on hand to provide information about what their groups do."

"One of the better parts of the day is the Old Fashioned Bake Off Contest in which residents are invited to bake their favorite 'goodie' and enter it in the contest. A prize will be given to the first place winner and second, third and honorable mention will receive ribbons. Cakes will be judged by a panel of volunteers, who have no other credentials than enjoying baked goods," said Cassano. "This is old-fashioned, hometown, friendly fun and competition."

Anyone who wishes to enter the bake-off should bring his or her baked item to the judging area at the East Village Green pool area at 1 p.m. Judging will take place at 1:30 p.m.

"There are no provisions for keeping baked items refrigerated," warns Cassano, "so if the baked items are perishable, the baker should provide for keeping it cool." Following the judging, participants may donate their baked item to the dessert table for everyone to enjoy, Cassano added.

Organizations from Levittown and the surrounding areas who wish to set up a table to exhibit are invited to do so. Organizations may provide family entertainment, if they choose or set up a display.

The Levittown Community Council is an umbrella group of residents and community organizations in Levittown and the surrounding area. Its purpose is to develop and maintain pride and unity within the community by working collaboratively to support the work of local organizations.
