With nearly as many people voting for the budget on the second vote as came out for the first, the Levittown School District budget was approved by the voters on June 6 after failing by 36 votes on May 15.

At the June 6 revote, the budget was approved at each of the nine polling places, as opposed to May 15 when it was voted down at four of the locations. Though on the evening of the first vote it appeared as though the budget failed by 43 votes, after a recount, it was found that it only went down by 36 votes.

In part because the vote was so close and in part because the board and administration felt they had already cut all excess out of the budget, the decision was made to resubmit the same budget of $119,586,057. Rather than forcing the district into using a contingency budget, in which children would have to give up all extracurricular activities including sports, instrumental music in third and fourth grade and larger class sizes in the elementary schools, the residents of the Levittown School District came out in full force, with the third largest voter turnout in three decades, to approve the budget 3823 to 2320, a 62.2 percent approval rate. Only 3930 voters came out for the first vote.

Board of Education Trustee Ken Auer commented on the large turnout following the announcement of the election results, thanking the election workers for their work. Ron Kinberg, vice president of the Levittown Board of Education for the confidence shown in the board and the district.

Dr. Herman Sirois, superintendent of the Levittown School District thanked the voters following the vote. "We'd like to thank all the residents of Levittown for exercising their wisdom in this vote," said Sirois. "It's very important to our children and the future of the whole community. These votes are crucial and I think we're all beginning to realize how crucial they are. Congratulations to Levittown, you did a wonderful job today."

Board of Education President Mike Moriarity, thanked the PTA for their work, not only with the second vote, but for encouraging voter turnout for both votes.
