On June 6 I will raise my flag in support of the Levittown School budget. Having myself gone through a year of high school on what we then called austerity, I do not wish to have the children of Levittown go through a year on a contingency budget.
Without a passed budget there will be no summer school, larger class sizes, no middle school remediation or gifted programs, and no Saturday review classes, but our children are still expected to pass the NY State test requirements handed to us by Commissioner Mills.
Without a passed budget there will be no 3rd and 4th grade music programs and no competitive marching band or jazz festival. (The next Mozart or Madonna may remain undiscovered.)
Without a passed budget there would be no varsity or JV sports program, diminishing our hopes of a Levittown Olympic medalist.
Without a passed budget many non-school district programs such as the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PAL, Levittown Soccer Club, and the Levittown Little League will have to make a choice between paying for the use of school facilities or moving out of Levittown.
Our children shouldn't lose required academic and extracurricular services. Not passing the budget will tell the students of Levittown that, "you're not worth it." The bottom line is that our children need these services and it's our children that will be paying for a failed budget.
Please don't let our children down. Vote yes on June 6 to adopt the Levittown School Budget; I know that I will be.
