It is important here in the Town of Hempstead that we are always assured of an adequate supply of water, both for our homes and for fire fighting purposes. All of the water supply serving Long Island comes from groundwater and the aquifer system that provides it. Town residents have traditionally cooperated in helping to preserve our precious water supply. It is, therefore, imperative that all residents of our township observe the following water sprinkling regulations as imposed by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water. These regulations are in effect for all residents of Nassau County, whether or not Town of Hempstead Water serves them.
During the period of the year from May 1 to Oct. 1, residents are required to observe the following water regulations:
1) The watering of lawns and shrubs is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., regardless of the day of the week.
2) If you reside at an even-numbered house address, you may water your lawn or shrubs only on even-numbered days of the month, and only before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. on those days.
3) If you reside at an odd-numbered house address, you may water your lawn or shrubs only on odd-numbered days of the month, and only before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. on those days.
The Department of Water appreciates your cooperation in assisting them in maintaining system pressures by limiting the seasonal demands placed on the water supply system. It is easy to comply with these regulations and they are more than adequate to provide a necessary supply of water for your lawn and garden.
The Town of Hempstead is, once again, counting on you for your cooperation. Those who fail to comply with these common sense rules are putting themselves at risk for a summons and/or fine.
On behalf of all the members of the Hempstead Town Board, I urge our residents to do all they can to conserve our water resources for generations to come.
If you have any questions regarding these simple regulations, call the Customer Service section at the Town of Hempstead Department of Water at 794-8300.
