This past week the Division Varsity Baseball team lost its first two games of the series to a tough Wantagh team.
In game one it was a pitchers' duel with Wantagh's Greg Voegler matched up against PJ Antoniato. Division had bases loaded in the first; second and third in the second; a man on second in the third and fourth; and first and second and no out in the sixth but could not make contact when they needed it. Wantagh only got a man on second or third in one inning but when they did they capitalized with a ground ball single up the middle by third baseman Mike Cretty. Division's Antoniato deserved a better fate, allowing only four hits, two of those infield singles, while striking out 11 batters.
In game two the Dragons hit the ball more often and harder, but still came out on the short end of a 5-3 game as junior Josh Flinn pitched a good game. The Dragons left 13 men on base this game, and had ample opportunities to blow the game open. No fault can be made of the Dragon hitters who hammered into a bunch of hard outs throughout the game.
In game three the Dragons finally got the win that they were looking for despite a shaky start. Division gave up two unearned runs in the first inning, but bounced back with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Dragons bounced back with three more in the second on a bases-loaded triple by Mike Hublitz. Dan Weingart got the win for Division, with relief help from Kevin Mulstay, who combined for a four-hitter. Besides Hublitz, junior Chris Castellano had two hits and three RBIs, while juniors Keith Feldman, Tom Messina, and sophomore Ray Montoro all added RBI hits early to break the game open. Division's defense got sloppy in the seventh inning when they allowed five unearned runs. Next week the Dragons have a bye week but the week after they play Hewlett to end the regular season schedule.
