As a Levittown resident and grandmother who takes her grandchild to the library weekly, I am disturbed by the apparent lack of concern for safety conditions in the children's section.
I recently witnessed an accident involving a toddler who was injured when he fell against a metal bar extending from the side of a chair. He was bleeding and required medical attention. The chairs were purchased, used, from another library.
There is no carpeting on the floors, causing the small metal chairs to easily slide and result in children falling.
The narrow space created by the tall book stacks placed close together create a situation where small children are unable to reach for books. In addition, many areas in the children's section are not wheelchair accessible.
The windowless reading program room lacks ventilation, suitable seating and is not nearly large enough to hold participating Levittown children.
I commend the efforts of the staff in the children's section. They do a remarkable job considering their working conditions. No way does the children's section of the Levittown Library measure up to the aesthetic and safety standards of other libraries in our area, ie. East Meadow, Bethpage, Farmingdale, et al.
At the last Library Board of Trustees meeting I heard that there is a $1 million library surplus. Mr. Martin, library director, at that meeting requested only $3,000 for some purchases for the children's section. This amount is insufficient to make any noticeable improvements. If the money is available, a large percentage of the surplus should be assigned to the children's section.
Let us make our children friends of the library so they will carry this positive experience the rest of their lives.
