This past week, the Division Varsity Baseball team won two of its three league games. The Dragons started out the week with a 14-2 victory over the Floral Park Indians. PJ Antoniato got the win, allowing no runs and one hit with 11 strikeouts over five innings. Kevin Mulstay also pitched an inning of shutout ball.

Big hitters for Division were juniors Chris Castellano, who had three hits and two runs batted in and junior Tom Messina who hit a two-run double to make the game 4-0. Other Division hitters who had big games were Jeff Tamarez, PJ Antoniato (who also had a homer), Steve Juliano, and Eric Fierro, who all had two hits.

Defensively, the Dragons turned over two double plays.

On Wednesday, the Dragons hosted Glen Cove and defeated them 9-1. Junior Josh Flinn got the win, allowing only two hits while striking out six batters in the five innings that he pitched. Steve Juliano and Kevin Mulstay each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, combining for four strikeouts.

Chris Castellano got the Dragons on the scoreboard first with an RBI single when he blistered a line drive single off the pitcher's leg. Eric Fierro led the Dragons with three hits and three RBIs. PJ Antoniato, Steve Juliano, and Tom Messina all chipped in with RBI hits.

The Dragons got rained out on Friday but got to play New Hyde Park on Saturday, only to lose 3-2, in a thriller game which ended with bases loaded. Junior Dan Weingart pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits while striking out eight batters. The Dragons who had played flawless defensive ball in their first five games, made four errors that led to the team's downfall. Mulstay gave Division another good inning of relief pitching, getting the Dragons out of a potential jam.

Once again, Castellano got the Dragons on the scoreboard with a hard single, and sophomore Ray Montoro supplied the other run batted in. On a defensive note, Catcher Eric Fierro had his first stolen base against him, after throwing out seven straight potential base-stealers.

Next week the Dragons have a three-game series against last year's state champions, Garden City. New Hyde Park, coached by 1991 Division Avenue High School grad Doug Robins also beat Garden City last week.
