Marvin (Mark) Ira Smith, 72, died on March 22, 2001. He was a 45-year resident of Levittown who had two passions in life, language-communication arts and teaching. Born in Manhattan on Dec. 18, 1928, and raised in Flushing, he took to radio during his high school years and became a radio announcer at the tender age of 16. Mark served in the US Army during the Korean War as a radio announcer. He was a broadcaster for many years working in radio news and TV announcing at WABC-TV, WGH, WBAB and WLIW. He ran a PR firm called Images and Impression counting among his clients the original LI Ducks hockey team. He also wrote articles and interviews for Long Island Magazine.

His passion for language and speech led him to teach; initially broadcasting in NYC and then as a highly regarded English teacher at Jonas E. Salk Junior High School in Levittown. At Salk he was also the faculty advisor for the television club. Soon, in addition to his secondary school activity he became an adjunct professor of speech and communication at Nassau Community College where he taught for over 30 years. After retiring from the Levittown School District, he expanded his college teaching to include Dowling College, St. John's University where he taught radio production and most recently Hofstra University where he taught several speech and communications courses.

The Levittown and LI communities were also part of Mark's passion. He was a member of the board of directors of Yours Ours and Mine (YOM), the community outreach in Levittown, where he lent his rich voice to YOM's promotional video. Mark also volunteered his time for many nonprofit organizations by doing voice-overs for various television and radio public service announcements. He was also very active in the Unitarian Universalist of Central Nassau in Garden City.

Mark always loved an audience, whether it was emceeing a jazz-pops concert at the Tilles Center or in front of a classroom of students who always laughed at his corny jokes. He considered himself a logophile, lover of words, and had a passion for literature, especially Shakespeare.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Cora Rathje Smith and is survived by his present wife Marlene; daughter Marilynn Smith Jacoby of East Setauket; sons Mark Smith of Hornell, NY, and Arthur Smith of Mobile, AL; a brother Charles Smith of Maquon, WI; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by the O'Shea Funeral Home, N. Wantagh. A private burial was held on March 28 for the immediate family. Donations can be made to YOM - Yours Ours and Mine Community Center, Inc., 152 Center Ln., Levittown, NY 11756 (796-6633).
