As a community bordered by bays, channels and inlets, recreational activities on the water are extremely popular, and boating has become almost a way of life for a large segment of our population. With the number of vessels and operators rising every year, it becomes increasingly important that "skippers" become knowledgeable about the rules of the waterways and how to deal with potential problems that might occur.

The Town of Hempstead Bay Constables are offering a Safe Boaters Course, which is mandatory before boaters between the ages of 10 through 17 may operate a vessel alone. All operators of Personal Watercraft (PWC), also known as Jet skis and wave runners, who are between the ages of 10 and 23 inclusive, must also pass a safety course. Each course will take place in the auditorium of the Conservation and Waterways Administration Building, located on Lido Boulevard in Point Lookout.

For youngsters ages 10 through 17, the classes will be held on Saturday, April 21, 28 and May 5 from 9 a.m. until noon. The classes for adults are scheduled for Thursday evenings, April 12, 19 and 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. Participants are required to attend all three three-hour sessions and pass a test in order to be certified to operate a vessel. There is a $10 course fee for adults 18 years and older. The course is free for participants under 18 years of age.

The Town of Hempstead is pleased to participate in the New York State Safe Boating Program, taught by our highly trained and experienced Bay Constables. Their work has been extremely effective in preventing boating accidents and in helping to save lives. They tell us that among the factors that account for improved boater safety include boater safety education, expanded law enforcement, safer boats and greater awareness of the roles of alcohol and drugs in boating accidents. All of these topics are included in the course.

To register or to obtain further information about boater safety courses contact the Bay Constables' office at 897-4100. To be a safe and an informed boater on our township's waterways, be sure to sign up for a Safe Boating Course today.
