Sean O'Donnell was picked for the MacArthur Athletic Spotlight for this week. This exceptional senior will be a two-sport athlete by the time he completes his senior year in June. There are many athletes who compete on two or sometimes even three teams during their senior year, which is an accomplishment in itself, but there are very few who will compete with the intensity and the impact that O'Donnell competes with.
O'Donnell has been a member of the Varsity Wrestling team since the ninth grade, something of a feat in itself, considering the grind and workload that wrestlers have to go through on a daily basis during the wrestling season. Coach Howie Greenblatt has built one of the most successful wrestling programs on Long Island and when he speaks about the success of his team, he is quick to mention O'Donnell as one of the reasons why. In order to have a winning program, coaches will tell you that you have to havewinners on your team. Winners are those athletes who can lead by example, who are willing to make the commitment to win and will make the necessary sacrifices to do so. O'Donnell fits the bill in all categories. He is captain of the wrestling team and has led the team to one of the most successful seasons that it has had up to this point in the season. The team has competed in a tournament almost every weekend and so far O'Donnell has finished as a tournament champion or as the runner up in every one of them. O'Donnell's only goal remaining in wrestling is to have a good showing in the team championships and the individual championships coming up in two weeks where he will be hoping to be named to the All County Team.
When the wrestling season ends, O'Donnell can be found on the baseball field where he has been a member of the varsity baseball team since the tenth grade and this year will probably be elected captain of the team. Baseball coach Steve Costello built a very successful baseball program and like coach Greenblatt in wrestling, Coach Costello will be relying heavily on O'Donnell to be a team leader. O'Donnell will be the starting catcher for the third year in a row, a very important and critical position on any baseball team. Coach Costello hopes to have his baseball team in the running for the county championship this season and if the Generals are there at the end you can be sure that O'Donnell will have played a major role in getting them there. O'Donnell is returning as an All-Conference player from last year and is hoping to upgrade that status to All-County by the seasons end.
O'Donnell has left his mark on the MacArthur HS Athletic program. There is still much work to be done and goals to be accomplished with some wrestling still to go and a full season of baseball still on the agenda.
Academically, O'Donnell is just as competitive in the classroom where he has an average of 90.7 and scored a 1010 on his SAT's. He is a member of the marching band and the jazz band.
The MacArthur community knows that O'Donnell is up to the task of finishing his career by leading his teams to county championships and putting the finishing touches on an outstanding high school career. They wish him luck in accomplishing these goals and congratulate him on his accomplishments.
