Kate Maniscalchi
|
Kate Maniscalchi, a three sport varsity athlete, is MacArthur's most recent choice for the athletic spotlight. The number of three-sport varsity athletes is slowly declining each year as athletes, even on the high school level, are becoming more specialized in their sports. This is not the case with Maniscalchi, as she was a starter on the girl's varsity soccer team since the ninth grade, she is a starter on the basketball team for the third year in a row and will start on the badminton team for the fourth year in a row. Not only does Maniscalchi start on all three teams, she is an impact player on all three.
If you ask any of Maniscalchi coaches what she means to these teams, they would tell you that they would hate to think where they would be if she wasn't playing. During the soccer season, her contributions kept the Lady Generals in the running for the playoffs, which they eventually did qualify for thanks to the effort that Maniscalchi and her teammates put forth. Now that basketball is here, Maniscalchi makes her presence felt as the starting point guard and is the "go to" player when the pressure is on and the team needs someone with the experience to be able to handle the ball and bring it up court to set up plays. A point guard who doesn't rattle under pressure is a necessary element for the success of any basketball team and Maniscalchi is the one who fits the bill for MacArthur.
Badminton is the sport that Maniscalchi has had the most success in. Starting since the ninth grade, it took Maniscalchi only one season to start making an impact and at the end of her first season, she was named to the All Conference team as a freshman. As a sophomore, she was named to the All-County team for the first time and repeated this feat by being named to the All-County team for a second year in a row. The only thing left is to go for the "three peat" and make the All-County team for the third year in a row, an impressive feat that not very many athletes accomplish. Before this happens, Maniscalchi still has some unfinished business to attend to and that is to help lead the Lady Generals to the playoffs in basketball. If the girls do qualify for the playoffs, you can be sure that Maniscalchi will have played a significant role in helping the team to get there.
After graduation, Maniscalchi plans on attending Nassau Community College for two years and then hopes to continue her education at Cortland State where she is planning to major in Physical Education. MacArthur wishes Maniscalchi the best of luck with her future plans and congratulates her on a fine high school athletic career.
