I am writing in response to John Bosco's letter regarding the need for modernization of the Levittown Public Library. While I am certainly not opposed to upgrading the library facility, I feel it is important while making budget considerations not to trade appearance for quality.

We in Levittown are blessed with one of the most extensive library collections around. If you go into the library looking for something, most likely you will find it. If they don't have it, they will (and do) order it or get it from another library. This is particularly true when a new book comes out that everyone wants to read. They don't just order one copy. You never go in and find out that you must wait months to get the book you want. They order enough copies to meet the demand of the patrons. That is not the case everywhere, and that is quality service in my opinion. People from all over Nassau County come to the Levittown Library because of its huge and diverse collection of books and reference materials. The children's collection is outstanding as well. We are very lucky!

All one needs to do is take a ride to Farmingdale to see that I am correct. Farmingdale has a beautiful, new modern facility ... with a less-than adequate library collection. As a former resident of Farmingdale, I can attest to this. If they say, "You can't judge a book by its cover," the same must be said of the library. It is what's inside that counts; the rest is cosmetic.

So, yes, modernize. I am in favor of Mr. Bosco's suggestions. But I ask the library board to continue making appropriations for quality literature and materials to keep our library well stocked and up-to-date.
