Levittown Fire Commissioner Thomas F. Courtney, Sr., a charter member of the Levittown Fire Department, passed away suddenly on Christmas Day. Funeral services, conducted by Nassau County Fire Chaplain, Father Kevin Smith, were held last Friday at St. Bernard's Church.

Courtney served the Levittown Fire Department for 51 years and was a fire commissioner for 48 of those years. A member of Ladder Company 1, Courtney was recognized as an honorary chief of the department. He was also past president of the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County.
Courtney also served on the Island Trees Board of Education from 1966-69. He was a school board trustee in 1967-68 and 1968-69 and was vice president of the board in 1967-68.
A Certified Public Accountant, Courtney was the comptroller for the Steamfitter's Union.
Courtney is survived by his wife Frances; his children- Pat, Barbara, Debra, Karen, Tom Jr., Michael, and Catherine; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Fireman's Home, 125 Harry Howard Ave., Hudson, NY 12534, in Commissioner Thomas Courtney's name.
