The Island Trees varsity wrestling team lost a close 39-33 decision to Roslyn. The team went down 30-9 before mounting a comeback to take the lead 33-30 going into the last two matches. In the final match, they lost a tough 9-3 decision to seal the win for Roslyn. The comeback was led by James Lyons, Julio Barea, Matt Fiorello and capped off with a pin at 171 lbs. by Chris Lorenzini. The next match is Friday, Jan. 5, at home against North Shore. Come out and support the team.
Showing great resiliency, the Bulldog's eighth grade basketball team rebounded from a four point defeat against Plainview and played a very spirited game against Wisdom Lane and came away with a comfortable 63-48 victory. With their record now at 5-1, the Dawgs move into a difficult part of their schedule. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Vincent Ciaravino with 25 points and 17 rebounds in a sheer display of power. Ryan Hollett scored 21 before fouling out early in the final period. Christian Salvage tore through the Wisdom press and finished with 11 points and eight assists. Brian Spiess added three, James Cobin two and Rob Lovaglio one to round out the scoring. Key rebounding by Albert Wong and Rich DiGregorio were huge factors in the win. Tough defense throughout by T.J. Fabis, Brian Beissel, Michael Topel and Sean Walsh helped to seal the victory.
The seventh grade boys basketball team put forth a solid effort in a loss to Wisdom Lane. The team was once again led by Pat Sarris, who scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds. Tim Dwyer and Matt Valinoti added six points each and played solid defense for the Bulldogs. Also scoring for the team were Kevin Kilfoil, Marshall Trager, Cole D'Ambrosio, John Pierro and Brian Balvin.
Congratulations to the girls seventh grade volleyball team on their win over Bethpage. The Lady Bulldogs were victorious winning four out of five games. Phenomenal teamwork was the key to the win with Meghan Sguigna, Kaitlin Moore and Stephanie Irving using 1-2-3 combinations throughout the match. Sabrina Cervasio, Dina Vecchione, Jen Reno, Elizabeth Badolato and Mimi Bearman showed fierce hustle and communication. Excellent serving by Meghan Doran, Michelle Topel, Ciara Larkin and Melissa Donnelly. Sarah Hess, Katelynn Schmidt, Paulina Orellana, Tina Bove and Jeanette Brand all helped on offensive plays to secure the match for Island Trees.
