In these days of so much negativity when one discusses politics, I would like to write about positive action which, in essence, has prevented a particularly hazardous occurrence.
In August of 2000, my daughter, who lives on Melanie Drive in East Meadow, smelled gas outside her home. She called LIPA and was told it was nothing and not to worry. Her husband called several more times, but LIPA never responded.
In late October standing outside her home, I said: "This smell is terrible," and she said, "We don't know what else to do, we have called and called."
I went home and called Legislator Dennis Dunne's office. His secretary was absolutely wonderful and Legislator Dunne himself got on the phone. I told him the story. Within 15 minutes the fire department was at the site. They (the first department) called LIPA. Finally, LIPA thoroughly checked and said, yes, indeed, there was a gas leak. Two weeks later they dug up the street and fixed the gas line.
Legislator Dunne helped in averting a possible tragedy. Suppose someone threw a lit cigarette in that area, the gas was accumulating, even starting a car could have caused something terrible.
So, I, as a resident of Levittown, thank Legislator Dunne and offer my thanks and gratitude as do the people of Melanie Drive in East Meadow.
