Lisa Macchia's lay-up early in the third quarter gave her 1,000 points in her career and highlighted Island Trees' 52-39 season-opening girls' basketball win over Sewanhaka. The junior center finished with 26 points, for a total of 1,005 and grabbed 16 rebounds.
"Lisa is just an outstanding basketball player," Island Trees head coach Missy Zamroz said.
Maccchia had 18 points in the first half as Island Trees built a 31-14 lead. When Macchia hit the milestone, the game was stopped and the 150 fans in attendance gave her a standing ovation, and she was presented with flowers and balloons.
"It was exciting for me and my team, since the girls have helped me so much," Macchia said. "It is relieving to get this over with so we can concentrate on winning as a team."
The Boys' 7th Grade White Basketball team played hard in a loss to Bethpage. Tim Dwyer led the Bulldogs in scoring, dropping in 12 points. Pat Sarris, Marshall Trager, Mike Shearer and Rob Hutnik all scored for the team. Pablo Salas, Matt Valinoti, Pat Sarris and Rob Hutnik did a nice job on the boards, grabbing four rebounds each. A great defensive effort was put forth by Bill Lewis and Joe Ciaravino.
The Girls 8th Grade Red Volleyball team played their first game against Packard. Although the team did not obtain the win, they were able to come back from behind to win the final two matches. Donna Braun played a spectacular game. She totaled 13 points from her deadly serves and played aggressively on the court. Nicole Carrazana also contributed with 7 points resulting from her powerful serve. Gina Brewer added 6 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Heads up play by Rachel Davids. Korin Jordan, Kelly Murphy, Kate Beale, Melissa Medina and Jamie Lent helped the Bulldogs win the last two matches. Gina Dziuba, Megan Carlson, Jackie Augner and Lori Brennan also added points to the game with outstanding serves. With the rest of the season in front of them, the Lady Bulldogs look forward to more challenging matches.
Congratulations to the Girls' 7th Grade White Volleyball team on their win over Plainview. The Bulldogs won three games in a row 15-1, 15-10 and 15-6. Excellent serving by Meghan Sguigna, Dina Vecchione, Ashley Davidson and Elizabeth Badolato and phenomenal teamwork by Katelyn Schmidt and Sabrina Cervasio. Great match girls.
