As the holiday season is upon us, the Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety has asked me to pass along guidelines for people to follow to ensure a safe and healthy holiday, and an even better New Year. This is a time of year when our residents are rushing from place to place, shopping, and carrying perhaps more money than at other times of the year.
Caution should be the key word for shoppers. Always keep your wallets, pocketbooks and valuables secure. Never flash large amounts of money, and try to bring with you just enough money to make your purchases. When using credit cards, be certain that all carbon copies are torn up, and never give your credit card number to solicitors who call you on the phone or show up at your doorstep.
When returning to your car with packages, never leave them visible to others in the back or front seats of your car. Always lock them up in the trunk, out of sight and secure.
If you are carrying checks to be cashed or deposited at your bank, do not endorse them until you actually get there. Unendorsed checks cannot be cashed by thieves or by someone who finds a lost check.
The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but mall and shopping centers are always crowded and people who have many things on their mind often let their guard down. Always be aware of your surroundings and always take an extra minute to be sure that your personal property is safeguarded. By following these easy suggestions, you are sure to celebrate a happy holiday, followed by a New Year that is filled with promise.
As we enter the 21st century, I hope for your safety and happiness during this most festive time of year. From my family to yours, I wish you the very best in the days and weeks to come.
