Melissa and Paula Guglielmi are the first set of twins to be named to the athletic spotlight for MacArthur High School since the award began three years ago. Their high school careers run very parallel both academically and athletically. Usually where you see one, you will see the other. This is particularly true when athletics are involved. Paula and Melissa have both been members of the varsity badminton and tennis teams since the ninth grade, Paula bowls during the winter season and Melissa takes the winter off.
Tennis coach, Amanda Fermature counted heavily on both Paula and Melissa for their leadership, their ability and their experience. Coach Fermature said, "It was like having two extra coaches on the court." Coach Fermature also said that "They were the most dedicated players on the team."
During the spring season, Paula and Melissa change their tennis racquets for badminton racquets but bring the same dedication to the badminton courts as they did to the tennis courts. Paula placed first in the County Championships as a 10th and 11th grader and was named to the All County team both years. Melissa was named to the All Conference team by placing first in that competition and placing third in the All County Tournament. Needless to say, these two veterans will be looking forward to the spring season and won't be happy with anything less than a County Championship in the Doubles Competition for Paula and a Singles Championship for Melissa. What a great way to end a brilliant high school career for these sisters, both being named to the All County team. Good luck to Paula and Melissa this spring season.
Off the courts these two athletes keep themselves busy. Both Paula and Melissa are members of the National Honor Society, the Italian Club, Key Club, and they are both Renaissance Card holders.
In the classroom, their achievements run as parallel as they do the courts. Melissa is ranked 79th in a class of 275 and Paula is ranked 65th. Paula has a 94 average and Melissa comes in with a 93 average and you can't get much closer than that.
Their accomplishments are exceptional and they both should be very proud of what they have done in their high school careers. Mr. and Mrs. Guglielmi should also be very proud of what their daughters have done.
Congratulations on two great high school careers. Good luck with the spring season and let's bring home those county championships.
