On July 5, just two months before Elizabeth Pollizzotto was supposed to begin her freshman year at Division Avenue High School, the 13-year-old Levittown girl was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. This Sunday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a car wash held at the Israel Community Center to help raise money for her treatments.
For just $4 a car, people can have their cars washed while at the same time helping a local family in need.
Elizabeth has had to be home schooled, according to her mother LouAnn, thus missing the beginning of her high school career. This was just one of the things Elizabeth has had to miss since being diagnosed with the disease. One of the hardest things for Elizabeth, said LouAnn, was having to skip attending the camp that she goes to every summer.
Now instead of camp, and instead of the excitement of her freshman year in high school, Elizabeth has to go into North Shore University Hospital for three days every three weeks for chemotherapy. Although it hasn't been an easy time for Elizabeth and family, her most recent tests have shown that the tumor is dissipating with the chemotherapy.
"We've had a struggle, but people have been very helpful so far," said LouAnn, noting that the family has had a lot of good friends helping them through this difficult time. It is Elizabeth's good friend, Jeanie Grier, with the help of her mother Debbie, who has coordinated this car wash to help the family.
A spaghetti dinner may also be hosted in the future to help the Pollizzotto family further.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can send checks made out to Elizabeth Pollizzotto to: 132 Shelter Lane, Levittown, NY 11756.
"God knows what we are in need of and I'm just going to leave it in his hands," concluded LouAnn.
