Following the first day of school, the Levittown Board of Education held their September meeting, at which time they heard a report from the administration, who declared that the first day of school went better than it has in years.
Superintendent of Schools Herman Sirois stated, "Transportation went well and the schools opened almost perfectly."
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Robert Davis, noted that this year the Levittown school, in part because of last year's retirement incentive and in part because of enrollment increases, opened with 80 new teachers. "We're very excited about the new people we've hired," said Davis. He went on to note that the buildings have all been inspected and he considered each one to be "very welcoming" for the first day. He stated that this was one of the lightest years they have had for bus problems in quite a while.
In general, explained Davis, the enrollment for the district was up at the opening of school. The kindergarten enrollment, he said was about where they predicted, indicating that the tremendous enrollment increases would be leveling off. "We may make it through in terms of classroom space," Davis announced.
Davis then went through school by school discussing the changes and how the first day went in the individual schools. According to Davis, East Broadway opened with approximately an additional three dozen students. Other points of interest at the various schools included the new classrooms at Lee Road, Northside, Summit Lane, Wisdom Lane being utilized for the first time. Gardiner's Avenue School, said Davis, was quite full this year. He also commented on the number of new teachers at the high school level this year, in both Division and MacArthur. Davis went on to note that this has been a trend for the last couple of years and approximately 40-45 percent of the teaching staff are non-tenured now. Davis stated that with this crop of new teachers the administration is anxious to get started on the mentoring program which was included in this year's budget. "All in all, from my perspective it was a good opening and the kids were terrific," concluded Davis.
Assistant Superintendent for Business Alan Groveman concurred, stating "This was one of the best openings we've had in quite a long time."
