The 2000 Empire State Games were held at Binghamton this summer. Levittown was well represented with five wrestlers from both Division and MacArthur who competed.
MacArthur wrestlers Matt Delorenzo and Reno Reitmayr wrestled great matches in freestyle, but fell short of medalling. Both wrestlers were eliminated by the eventual champions of their weight class.
Bob Bennett, a Division graduate, wrestled in the Greco Roman Open Division. His fate was similar to Delorenzo and Reitmayr. Bill Bennett, also a Division grad, was able to battle his way to a freestyle bronze medal after losing to the eventual champion in the open division. Levittown's gold medalist was Chris Bennett (Bill's cousin and Bob's brother). Chris, who attends Division Avenue HS, was able to dominate his weight class in Greco Roman style by pinning or tech falling everyone to the finals where he wrestled to a 13-7 victory for the gold.
The competition was tough and all the above wrestlers should be commended for their hard work and dedication in the sport of wrestling. All five wrestlers mentioned began their wrestling career in the Levittown PAL wrestling program.
