Gardiner's Ave. Bus Driveway Proposal Angers Neighbors
Levittowners who reside on the roads bordering Gardiner's Avenue Elementary School had no idea the school district planned a bus driveway that in some instances would come within inches of their property line until two signs went up last week announcing that the construction was to begin July 24. The bus driveway itself and the perceived exclusion of neighborhood input has prompted residents on Gardiner's Avenue and Book and Club Lanes to contact their local legislators and the district to try and prevent the construction. As of press time the construction has been delayed and a community meeting was planned for Thursday morning of this week.
Area Birds First in County to Test Positive for West Nile Viruse
It was announced last Friday that the first birds in Nassau County to test positive for the West Nile Virus this year were found in Bethpage and in North Wantagh. While this discovery does raise some concerns local officials are reassuring the public that none of the mosquitoes collected in the area and tested have been found to be carrying the disease, indicating that these birds may have flown in from somewhere else.
Shawn Fagan Promoted in Baseball League
Division Avenue High School graduate Shawn Fagan, who recently signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, was promoted from the Blue Jays New York-Penn League team up to the Blue Jays South Atlantic League team in Hagerstown. Fagan was hitting a solid .293 with the Queenskings when he received the call in the middle of a game that he would be promoted to the Blue Jays' next level team.

On Saturday, July 8, women from all over Long Island - and from places as far away from Long Island as Kenya - converged on the Woodward Parkway Elementary School in Farmingdale to compete in the 17th annual Vytra Health Plans Long Island Women's Run.
