Though the Levittown School district is considering it a random incident, the Nassau County Police Department's 8th Precinct is still investigating whether the person or persons who fired approximately 18, 30 caliber rifle bullets into the second story of the Levittown Memorial Education Center on Tuesday June 13 had a grudge with one of the staff members from the vocational center.

Neighbors called the 8th Precinct when they heard shots fired somewhere between 11 and 11:05 p.m. last Tuesday. When the police arrived they found 18 shell casings. According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Herman Sirois, the bullets went through the shatter-proof windows but did not break them. Bullets were taken out of the window frames and the ceiling and wall of an office in the school. Bullets also went through the upper window panels, over the ceiling and into the roof.

The school district has patched up the holes but has not yet completely repaired the damage. Sirois noted that, though they did give the police the names of any students who were recently suspended or disciplined, he believes this was a random "prank." He said that there was no repeat of the incident, no threatening notes, no follow-up and nothing preceding it so therefore he believes it was not directed at the school or anyone in particular. "It's a nuisance, but it appears to be random," said the superintendent.

Detective Ron Capone, the investigating detective on the case, stated that they have looked into the possibility that the shooting was done by a disgruntled student, "but so far everything has been unproductive ... we are certainly looking at the possibility that there may have been a target but I can't really say that for sure."

Detective Cliff Alek, of the 8th Precinct, has said that to his knowledge, incidents such as these are very unusual. "We don't have random shootings at school buildings in Nassau."

The perpetrator or perpetrators would face second degree criminal mischief charges, for the damage done to the building and could face additional charges for the discharge of a firearm. According to Detective Alek, they are currently giving all their attention to the case because it involved gunshots being fired.

The 8th Precinct is seeking the public's assistance in gathering any pertinent information on this case. As of right now the major lead they have is that someone saw a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Pathfinder, leaving the scene, but they do not have a license plate number or clear description. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact the 8th Squad.
