Veterans from anywhere and everywhere, as well as family, neighbors and friends came out in huge numbers last week to remember and mourn the loss of American Legion Post 1711 Commander Joseph F. Kavanagh, who died on May 30.
Island Trees Residents Oppose Faculty Parking Lot Proposal
Although much of the Island Trees monthly board of education meeting on Wednesday, May 31, was business as usual, going over various business items and honoring faculty members and students, some residents took the opportunity to express their opposition to a proposal to construct a faculty parking lot in what is now a vacant lot by Sparke Elementary School.
Division Baseball News
Division graduate Mike Pelcher has recently pitched his Briarcliffe Jr. College baseball team to the Jr. College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. Pelcher had a very strong season, going 5-1. This is Pelcher's second trip to the world series since the team also went last season.
Lady Bulldogs Softball
The Lady Bulldogs were set and ready to go for their last regular season game at home, also known as "Senior Day." What a day it proved to be, as the ladies took the win after 10 innings. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, the score tied at three, Christina O'Brien stepped up and was determined to end the game. She certainly did, driving in Jaclyn Habermehl from third base for the winning run and a 4-3 win. O'Brien finished the game with two hits and two RBIs. Pitcher Jamie Pietrantoni did the rest, allowing just four hits and striking out 12.
