The Island Trees J.V. Lacrosse Team ended its season at 8-7 with an impressive victory over a strong Friends Academy team. The Bulldogs were able to take an early 5-0 halftime lead and were then able to control the tempo and the game. Paul Wigdzinski (2 goals, 3 assists) and Jen Fradua (2 goals) led the Dawgs to the victory. Brian Bennetti, Rob Bischoff, John Ambrosio and Mike Weaver each scored a goal for the Dawgs. The defense had its best game of the season, letting up only two goals into the fourth quarter. Matt Fiorello also played outstandingly, totaling 11 saves. A great year with a great ending.
The eighth-grade girls softball team played terrific ball at Packard. Mary Seremeta did a wonderful job on the mound, pitching the entire game. Excellent defensive plays included Shannon McAdam's tag out at the plate and a pick-off at third. Kristin Gilson, Seremeta, Lisa Provenzano and Keri Spiess made outstanding plays in the field. Jenna Steele did a marvelous job backing up first base and prevented the other team from gaining another base. Hitting for the Lady Bulldogs was Jessica Galella, Spiess, Seremeta, Romina Chacon and Kate Schamberger. McAddam, Laura Hyland and Gilson all had RBIs during the game. Nice effort ladies!
The seventh-grade softball team got some revenge by defeating Salk 15-4. Michelle McGurk led the charge for the Lady Dawgs with a spectacular pitching performance. She pitched a complete game and struck out 11 batters. McGurk also contributed offensively with 2 hits, 2 walks and a run scored. Grace Vinberg was an intimidating presence behind the plate, gunning down three girls attempting to steal second and silencing the Salk running game. Offensively, the girls were led by Brittany Faherty, who had 4 hits, including a mammouth home run to lead off the fourth inning. Diana Wennik, also contibuted a big hit with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases in a 7-run fourth inning that blew it open for the Lady Dawgs. Also contributing offensively for the Lady Dawgs were Jackie Augner, Nicole Carrazana and Korin Jordan with 2 hits and a run scored apiece; Stephanie Werling and Lori Brennan with a hit, a walk and a run scored; Gina Brewer with a double and a run scored and Gina Dziuba, Megan Carlson, Lauren O'Shea, Kaitlyn Beale and Nathaly Estrada, each with a run scored.
