The Division Blue Dragons finished up its season with two straight losses in the playoffs, losing to a tough Island Trees team 5-1, and to Garden City 7-3. This is the first time in 12 years (since 1988) that the Dragons did not win at least two playoff games. Ironically, it was 12 years before then that the Dragons did not win at least one playoff game.
Despite the disappointment of losing so early, the Dragons are very happy with the season in general, and proud to announce the winners of post season honors this year.
The Dragons had three all county selections going to juniors: P.J. Antoniato for his pitching and great defensive play; Eric Fierro who caught all year and batted .488; and Steve Juliano who played a spectacular third base, short stop when Antoniato pitched, and also filled in as relief pitcher giving Division some very valuable saves throughout the season, while batting a team leading .495.
Division had two more players selected to the all conference team. Senior outfielder Kevin Schneider batted .350 with 22 RBIs, and established himself as one of the best defensive outfielders ever at Division. Dan Cronin, who played first base and right field, also made the conference.
Sophomore Jeff Tamaraz made all league as second baseman, hitting .330 while stealing 14 bases. Tamaraz was one of Division's few bright spots in the playoff loss to Island Trees as he had three hits and made some beautiful defensive plays. Junior Phil Stumphf also made all league as a pitcher after going 5-2.
While the Dragons did not fare so well this year in their playoffs, Division Alumni Shawn Fagan is having tremendous success. The '96 Division grad played in the Eastern Regional at Yogi Berra Stadium in New Jersey with his Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State opened up the tournament with a very disappointing loss to the University of North Carolina as they went down 13-5. After this loss, Penn State had to play out of the loser's bracket, beating West Point 3-1, then beating host and big east champion Rutgers 6-5. After this they had to play and beat North Carolina two straight, and they did 6-5 and 10-3. Penn State is now one of 16 teams left in the country as they participate for the NCAA world series. Their next opponent has not yet been determined.
