The Island Trees Varsity Baseball team capped off its amazing regular season with a 14-4 victory over Jericho. The Bulldogs ended the season with 21 wins and only 1 loss. Greg Thomson went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Thomson ended the season with a .586 batting average with 7 homeruns and 51 RBIs. Anthony Pena ended his great Island Trees baseball career in regular season play with a 2 for 5 day. Pena hit .456 with 4 homers and 37 RBIs. Mike Cavalcante went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs, while Frank Maculuso, Scott Kapica and Matt Ostrowski all added 2 hits apiece. Mike Thompson picked up the win on the mound running his record to 5 and 1. Now, the real fun begins. The second season begins with the start of the Nassau County Championship Playoffs. The 2nd seeded Bulldogs take on the 3rd seeded arch town rival Division Blue Dragons. It should be a real donnybrook!

The JV Baseball team improved its record to 16 and 1 with a defeat over Jericho by a score of 13 to 6. Pat Iannone broke the score open in the 5th inning with a 2 out triple to bring in 2 runs. Chris Caltabiano secured his own win on the mound with a follow-up 2 run homerun in the 5th. Herbert Reyes added a homerun in the 6th. Jeremy Small and Rob Ciovi each added 2 hits apiece in the win.

Congratulations to the track team on an excellent meet at Merrick Avenue JHS. Great job by Ron Lettis on 2nd in the 400 meter, 200 meter and long jump. Stefani Caminiti ran a great 55 with a 1st place finish. Also, Don Ludwig with 3rd in the mile and Lisa LoFaso placing 2nd in the 800 meter. Special thanks to Sean James.

The 7th grade Softball team won its second game in a row by defeating Berner by a score of 12-4. Grace Vinberg lead the way by pitching a complete game, allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs and also contributed offensively with 2 hits, a walk and a run scored. Defensively, the Lady Dawgs were spectacular. They gobbled up every ground ball and made the plays look routine. Offensively, the Lady Dawgs were lead by Diana Wennik who had 3 hits runs scored; Hillary Sciacca, who had 2 hits, a walk and 3 runs scored; Amanda Cataldo, who had 2 hits and 2 runs scored and Gina Brewer and Stephanie Werling, who each hit rocket doubles and scored a run. Also contributing were Nathaly Estrada with a single and a run scored, Donna Braun with a double and Jackie Augner, Lori Brennan, Nicole Carrazana, Megan Carlson, Kaithlyn Beale and Korin Jordan with a single apiece.

The 8th grade Softball team made a terrific effort against Berner. Although they did not win the game, the team played an aggressive and intense game. Mary Seremeta did a wonderful job pitching in her first game. Sereneta also had a single in the game. Romina Chacon played a tough and intimidating game catching. Chacon also got on base twice, advancing both times to score. Exceptional plays were made by Laura Hyland with a nice grab in left field, Kate Schamberger, Jessica Lospitalier, Kristin Gilson, Jessica Kilfoil, Lisa Provenzano and Christina LoFaso. Hitting for the Lady Bulldogs was Kate Schamberger, Lisa Provenzano, Shannon McAdam, Laura Hyland and Jessica Kilfoil. The base running was also extremely aggressive with many girls sliding into the bases. Jessica Kilfoil, Romina Chancon, Kate Schamberger, Lisa Provensano and Laura Hyland all got down in the dust to grab the base. The team put their hearts and minds in the game. The girls should be extremely proud of their fine effort and should look forward to their next game.

The 7th grade baseball team played an outstanding game by tying Bethpage with a score of 8-8. The awesome batting was lead by Anthony Santonocito with a grand slam in the 5th inning. Ilker Ucaner contributed by hitting a stand-up triple and then later stealing home. Christina Salvage and Mike Topel did a great job pitching.

The 8th grade baseball team redeemed themselves with a come-from-behind win over Bethpage. Bethpage went ahead with the help of some bloop singles to the outfield. However, Matt Rottkamp settled down to pitch 5 quality innings, but once again received a no decision for his efforts. Matt left the game with a score of 5-5 in the 5th inning and Anthony Thompson took over on the mound to close out the game. The Bulldogs were down to their last out and a runner on second base when Matt Sinisi drove in Tom Leonick with the winning run when a single passed their second baseman to make the final score 7-6. the entire team never game up throughout the entire game and this effort paid off in the end.
