The Island Trees Baseball team had a very successful and memorable Spring Break. The Bulldogs went 6 and 0 and increased its league overall record to 11 and 1.
It all started on April 20 with Anthony Pena tossing a two-hit shut-out to defeat Locust Valley by a score of 1-0. Ryan Pastore drove in the winning run while going 1 for 3.
The team then went on the road for its first trip to Cooperstown, NY. The Bulldogs spent Monday, April 24 in the quaint country town that is home to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Museum.
The following day, the Bulldogs defeated a team from Harpersville, NY by a score of 16 to 7. Bryan Mercer picked up his first varsity win on the mound, while catcher Joe Iglio's decisive two-run triple secured the win. Iglio went 2 for 4 with three runs scored to earn the game MVP trophy. The game was played at the Detroit Tiger Minor League A complex. The win also marked Coach Nicholas Grande's 100th victory for his career as the Head Coach at Island Trees.
The next morning, the Bulldogs defeated Uniondale in an early morning contest, by a score of 17- 2, to win the Harvey Sandig Tournament. Anthony Pena went 4 for 5 with 6 RBIs including a huge home run to earn the game MVP trophy. Infielder Ken Chaput went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, while Brett Rottkamp scattered five hits over five innings for the win.
On Thursday, April 27, the Bulldogs returned home and swept a doubleheader from Locust Valley by scores of 11-3 and 5-2. In the first game, Anthony Pena picked up the win, increasing his record to 4 - 0. Chris Mason went 2 for 3 including a big home run. Greg Thomson also went 2 for 3 including two RBIs. In the nightcap, Rob Nelson pitched a complete game five-hitter to increase his record to 3 - 0. Greg Thomson hit a line drive home run over the fence in right to secure the victory.
On Friday, April 28, Island Trees defeated Wheatley by a score of 2-0. Mike Thomson tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out 11 and walking no one. Rightfielder Mike Cavalcante went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
To cap off a great week, the Bulldogs defeated league rival Valley Stream South in a Saturday evening affair at Baldwin Park by a score of 8 - 4. Greg Thomson went yard again, while Joe Iglio went 3 for 4 with four RBIs in the contest. Mike Cavalcante earned his first varsity win, with 8 strikeouts over five innings.
The team would like to thank all the parents, administrators, teachers and friends who made their trip so successful.
