Very often I receive mailings from agencies with which we cooperate in order to inform the public about items that may be of interest. The Nassau District PTA Leader contains important information for parents to use when dealing with their children, and the issues with which their children must deal. I pass along this information in the hope that it may be helpful. Please review the following to see if you and your children are on task.

Study Skills: Good study skills promote better report cards.

* Provide the necessary tools and environment to do homework.

* Set priorities - arrange assignments from the most difficult to the easiest.

* Agree on specific times to schedule homework.

* Keep track of study times and breaks.

Let Your Child Know That School Is Important:

* Talk with your child's teacher.

* Attend school events. Volunteer for school activities. Get active in PTA.

* Provide teachers with information pertaining to changes in family circumstances.

* Go to school board meetings.

Ideas and Feelings:

* Be aware of what makes your child angry.

* Know your child's best friend.

* Who is your child's hero?

* What is his favorite TV show?

* How does your child feel about him/herself?

Take Charge of TV:

* Discuss, select, and view TV programs with your children.

Let Your Children Know They Are Important to You:

* Spend time with your children.

* Make sure that their activities are well supervised.

* Encourage your child to be involved in positive activities such as Scouts, sports, and other group pastimes.

If Your Child is Being Bullied:

* Help your child find ways to feel comfortable with peers.

* Tell your child to maintain eye contact.

* Help your child learn how to interpret facial expressions and body language.

* Be a good role model for your child.

Parenting is not an easy job and few, if any, parents are perfect. We need all the tools, resources guidelines and support that we can get.
