In response to the Chairman of the Board of Assessors' announcement this week that he would support the reassessment of the properties in Nassau County, Legislator Dennis Dunne has said that it is his belief, through the research he has done, that this re-evaluation of the system will help the Levittown area.
Dunne, who came out in support of the reassessment at the end of 1999, noted that the conclusions that he has drawn through the hearings the legislature has held and his own research, are that Levittown, East Meadow, Salisbury and North Wantagh will be among the 1/3 of areas in Nassau County that are expected to be assisted through the reassessment.
While he strongly believes that the area will be helped, Dunne added that he has not been able to determine how much these communities would benefit, monetarily. "I couldn't even give a guess-timate at this point, but we will be in the 1/3 that is helped by the reassessment. That's what makes me push for it."
When asked what made Levittown among the areas to be assisted through the reassessment, Dunne responded, "You have a 60x100 lot in Levittown, a plot of land, with a house on it that's being taxed the same amount as a house on two acres in the North Shore and that's not fair. Though a house on the North Shore is going to be hurt, because of the number of houses we have, we're going to be helped." He noted that it was the size of the lot and the cost of houses in Levittown which would cause a positive result for Levittown taxpayers.
"If the final analysis is good for my community and the county as a whole, and it will be, I'll definitely support the reassessment and right now it appears that way and that's why I'm supporting it," concluded Dunne.
