Winter I athletics at Jonas Salk Middle School has come to a successful conclusion. The 7th grade volleyball team finished the season with a 7-3 record. The team began as a young inexperienced group and through hard work and determination blossomed into a strong team of volleyball players with a promising future. Captain's Mikele Reitmayr and Emily Reuter led the team. The setters for the Salk volleyball team were Kellie Curnuck and Cathleen Schmidt. The excellent passing of Jennifer Strauss, Jackie Skarlsky, Jackie Pearce, Ashley Glennon and Barbara Baez controlled the defense. Other members of the team were Captain Meghan Saccone, Danielle Tricolla, Elisha Guadagno, Meredith Massa, Kristina Hernandez and Laura Wenzel.

Salk basketball players benefitted from a clinic run by the Adelphi University basketball team.

The girls' 8th grade volleyball team finished the season with a 3-7 record. The highlight of the season was a 3-2 victory over an undefeated Hicksville team, and an intense five game victory over powerhouse Berner Middle School. The Salk setters were composed of veteran players Marissa Lanza, Toni Caserta, Jessica Vitiello and Whitney Vecchione. The offense was generated from consistent serving from Corinna Deoliveira, Michelle Grohosky, Quinn Egan and Lauren Saladino. Other players who contributed each game were Chelsea Olsen, Justine Richards, Aimee Pearlman, Krista Owens, Val Gula, Jessica Flavin, Jill Grey, Jami Caruso and Leah Bogsted.

The Seahawk basketball teams also were very competitive. The 8th grade basketball team finished the season with a record of 6-4. The boys lost their four games by an average of two points. The work ethic the boys exhibited allowed them to finish the season on a three game winning streak. Point guards Nick Tintle and Mark Tadros led the offense. The leading scorers for the Seahawks were Dan Walters, Dave Walters, Jim Nally and Rich Bailey. Eric Ackerman, Robert Goetchius and Camilo Hernandez displayed tough defense. The 7th grade basketball team finished with a 4-6 record. Although the team did not have a winning record they worked hard and developed into a solid unit. Point guard Joe Alagna led the offense. The leading scorers were Vinny D'Accordo and James McEnroe.

The highlight of the boys' basketball season was on Jan. 13 when the Adelphi University basketball team visited Salk gymnasium and gave a clinic. Jim Ferri, the head basketball coach of Adelphi, coached the Salk players through a series of drills and strategies. Coach Ferri also demonstrated several offense and defensive techniques that his team uses during the season. The players from Adelphi worked one on one with the Salk athletes on individual skills, demonstrating their finesse and technique. The clinic was a huge success and the athletes at Salk were able to gain some knowledge and see what it takes to strive as a collegiate athlete.
