Hoping to inspire some future homegrown Olympic heroes, the Town of Hempstead's Newbridge Arena will host instructional training camps in figure skating, hockey and goaltending for youngsters 5 to 17 years of age this summer. Registration for each of the training camps is being conducted at the arena office and additional program information is available by calling 783-6181, according to Supervisor Rich Guardino.
"The booming popularity of figure skating and ice hockey across Long Island has created a heightened need for proper training and coaching," said Guardino. "The Newbridge Arena has assembled a most distinguished staff of instructors to guide the development of participating youngsters."
Famed Olympian Elaine Zayak will supervise the figure skating camp, set to meet in half-day sessions, Monday through Friday. The hockey camp will be held on a full-day, daily basis under the direction of former Boston Bruin, Andrew Cozzi. As an extra summer feature there will be a hockey camp specifically for "goalies" conducted by Mike Orth.
According to rink director Rick Gardner, the ice surface at Newbridge Arena will also be open for public sessions and private parties throughout the summer. The number for additional information is 783-6181.
"With parents inclined to make early plans for their children's summer camp experiences, the Newbridge Arena has quickly and concisely organized its training programs in the hope of attracting a large number of young skaters and hockey players," explains Councilman Joseph Kearney.
Brochures detailing training camp specifics and explaining the fee structures are available at the rink. The Newbridge Arena is located within the confines of the town's Newbridge Road Park, situated at the foot of Newbridge Road in Bellmore.
