Richard V. Guardino, Jr., Supervisor, Town of Hempstead

Now that W-2 forms have been mailed to all wage earners, it is now the time of year that just about everyone should be readying themselves to tackle the task of preparing their 1999 income tax returns. The forms must be prepared, mailed and postmarked by midnight on Monday, April 17, just about two months away.
Not everyone is an accountant, so keeping abreast of the constantly changing filing procedures and tax laws can be confusing. Often, a little help is welcome.
In the Town of Hempstead, senior citizens are offered free assistance in preparing their income tax forms. Through the town's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, the Internal Revenue Service works with the town to train volunteers who help seniors prepare basic income tax forms. Complicated financial situations may require the services of tax preparation professionals.
From now until April 17, senior citizens in Hempstead Town can take advantage of this opportunity simply by making an appointment through their local senior center, senior club, or at any public library. Some of the necessary papers to bring along are the previous year's tax forms; wage and/or pension reports (W-2 and W-2P); all 1099 forms for interest and dividends; your 1999 year-end Social Security forms; real estate tax papers and any other pertinent tax information. This could include medical and dental bills you paid, travel mileage from your home to the doctor's office and the cost of medical prescriptions. This information might be helpful if you itemize your deductions.
Programs such as VITA are formulated and organized by the Department of Senior Enrichment to meet the special needs of the township's senior population. On behalf of all the members of the Hempstead Town Board, I urge all senior citizens to take advantage of this unique opportunity. The Town of Hempstead's Department of Senior Enrichment is always available to answer your questions and to be of service to you. You can find out about the VITA Program or the many other programs available to the town's senior citizens. Be sure to call them at 485-8100.
