The Salk football team was one of the many teams that enjoyed a successful fall season.

Fall athletics at Jonas Salk Middle School were a huge success. The cross country team, boys soccer team, girls soccer team, badminton team and the football team demonstrated dedication and sportsmanship all season long. In addition, all of the athletic teams carried large rosters to encourage participation.

The highlight of the season was the cross country team, coached by Mr. Lassen. The team worked hard and improved all season long. Their team spirit and dedication allowed them to be competitive in all of their meets. The team finished a majority of their meets in second or third place. The team was led by top runners Mark Tadros, Matthew Meyer and Jessica Vitiello.

This year's seventh grade boys soccer team had a rough season losing their opener 8-0 to a very good Berner team. Fortunately, the boys slowly improved Wisdom Lane 4-4 and beating a tough Wantagh team 4-3. Top scorers for the Seahawks were Lou Pirello, Nick Gargiso and John Anarumo in goal. The eighth grade boys soccer team finished the season with a 3-6 record. Despite injuries, they continued to work hard and improve throughout the season. Their victories included wins over Grand Avenue, Island Trees and Wisdom Lane. The back line was led by John Cappa, Matt Levy, Camilo Hernandez and goalie Rich Reuter. The offense was led by Evan Gerard, Brian Sciubba, Will Macher and Eric Ackerman.

The seventh grade girls soccer team finished their season with a 4-4 record. Top scorers for the Seahawks were captain Emily Reuter, Brianna Campisa and Jackie Pearce. The defense was led by midfielders Mikele Reitmayr, Ashley Glennon and Shaina Drucker. Outstanding goaltending was displayed by captain Kellie Curnuck, who had over 80 saves and allowed less than 10 goals the entire season. The eighth grade girls soccer team finished the season with a 1-6 record. Despite the rocky road, the girls played with enthusiasm and improved a great deal by the end of the season. Co-captains Toni Caserta and Marissa Hall supplied the team with solid leadership. The offense was led by Jill Pulsinelli who led the team in scoring. Defensively, Corinna DeOliveira and Lisa Oliveri demonstrated outstanding play in goal.

The girls badminton team continued its strong tradition with another successful year. The girls' positive attitude, work ethic and dedication paid off in their overall improvement individually and as a team. The top singles players for the Seahawks were Kristina Gros and Terry Gierczak. Lisa D'Alessandro and Marie Lombardo were two-year veterans who added experience to the team.

The boys football team finished the season with a 3-2 record. The athletes worked hard all season and dedicated themselves to excellence. In addition, the players demonstrated sportsmanship and team spirit. The Seahawk offense was led by quarterback Nick Manfredo and running back Nick Tintle. The defense was anchored by eighth grade standouts Dan Walters, Dave Walters, Ed Loscalzo, Rich Bailey, Chris Caine and Joe Conticelli.
