The Town of Hempstead Town Council, under Republican control, has spent millions of our taxpayer dollars fighting against, and losing at each step, a lawsuit which advocates the creation of councilmanic districts within the Town of Hempstead. As a matter of fact, at taxpayer cost, this court case has been appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court. It's ironic that two Republican incumbents from the Levittown area, Gary Hudes and Linda Reed, lost under the at-large election system that they and their colleagues on the town board have been fighting to preserve for years. If the Republican-controlled council had embraced councilmanic districts, rather than fight it each step of the way, there would always be a resident from the Levittown area representing us on the town council.
Though, under Republican reasoning, this area is represented by six council members who hold the at-large seats, it really should not matter that there will not be anyone from this area serving on the council starting in the year 2000. In 2000, three Democrats will join the remaining three Republicans who were not up for re-election year. I have confidence, as should all residents, that the Levittown area will receive superior representation by Dorothy Goosby, Scott Banks and Rita Kestenbaum three Democratic council members-elect) as well as the remaining Republicans on the town council.
