The Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment continues to lead the way in providing services in our vast senior population here in the Town of Hempstead, America's largest township.

With 16-full-scale senior citizen centers, and 135 local clubs, our seniors are well taken care of as far as their social and recreational needs are concerned. But our service to seniors does not stop there. We are concerned about the health and well being of our senior residents. That's why we continually provide regular blood pressure screenings at our clubs and centers, and we annually conduct a health fair for seniors where many to most of their health needs are addressed.

Each autumn the town provides free flu shots for our seniors at the centers, and sees to it that as many older residents as possible take advantage of this outstanding opportunity.

During the fall season, many centers hold their annual bazaars and craft sales. This is an excellent opportunity for area residents to pick up some great holiday bargains, while helping in the fund-raising efforts of the senior center.

A typical week at a town senior center includes exercise, bingo, painting, bowling, sewing, arts and crafts, library visits, and, of course, lunch. Health care professionals visit from time to time, as do social workers from the department to provide information and referral services. If a member is celebrating a birthday or an anniversary, there is often a big celebration involved, including music, dancing, and a great time.

Many seniors become involved in painting to a degree where they are able to show their works, and others present their writing or literary efforts in magazines and journals.

This is an exciting time for senior citizens in the Town of Hempstead. Our centers and clubs are always seeking new members, and you are eligible to join at just 60 years of age. On behalf of all the members of the Hempstead Town Board, I urge you to visit your local senior center or club today. For more information, call the Department of Senior Enrichment at 485-8100. They'll be happy to let you know about the facility closet to your home and answer any questions you may have. As we move forward to the year 2000, I want our senior residents to know that we will continue to provide services for them well into the 21st century. If you are not already involved at a senior center or club, I urge you to make a phone call today. I am certain you will be glad that you did.
