The JV Football Bulldogs won a wild contest, beating the East Rockaway Rocks 25-24. "This was one of the most exciting high school games I've ever witnessed," said Coach Volpe.
The star of the game was Mike Rossi. On offense he rushed for 172 yards on 14, caught one pass for 10 yards and returned kickoffs for another 120 yards for a total of 302 all-purpose yards and he scored three touchdowns. Rossi also had seven solo tackles on defense, many of them saved a possible East Rockaway score. Island Trees opened the scoring with a Jimmy Lyons QB sneak for a touchdown, set up by a Paul Wigdzinski fumble recovery that ran down to the one yard line. But, the Rock answered back with two touchdowns to lead at the half 12-6.
After sleeping through the first half, the Dawgs awoke to play football. Rossi returned the kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Key blocks by Andres Rivera and Cory Owen helped make the return successful. Fernando Suarez kicked the point after to make the score 13-12. The Rock came right back scoring on its next two possessions to make the score 24-13. But, the Bulldogs would not be denied victory on this day.
The Dawgs scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 65-yard drive to make the score 24-19. After a strong defensive stand, the Bulldogs started their next offensive deep in their own territory. Despite bad field position, it took the lead for good on a Rossi TE reverse for 83 yards to score. Dondi Peterson (5 tackles and 1 sack) and Zack Strauss (6 tackles, 3 assists) helped preserve the building victory.
The Bulldogs record is 1-1. Next game is home against Valley Stream North.
The JV Girls improved their record to 4 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties with a good victory over Herricks 1-0. The winning goal was scored nine minutes into the second half by Chelsea Marciano off an assist from Alyssa Fleming. Great defense by Kate Schamberger, Danielle Cama, Diana Connolly and Elena O'Brien helped Erin Dodge earn her second shutout. Excellent two-way play by halfbacks Stephanie Lucia, Jamie Zetterberg and Ida Falcone contributed to the win.
The Boys JV Soccer team has started the season on a roll. The team opened up with a non-league game on Sept. 14 against Mepham. The Bulldogs played an aggressive game and earned a 1-1 tie. The lone goal was scored by freshman Charlie Truelson. Pete Kostaras made several big saves to keep the bulldogs from being defeated. Another big game in goal by Pete Kostaras kept the Bulldogs from losing their first game. The last game of the week was against Plainedge. The final score was 1-1. Joe McCauley scored the goal for the Bulldogs. Julio Barea and A. J. Latuputty played outstanding in the tie.
The Boys White Soccer team had a scrimmage against Wisdom Lane and the Bulldogs were ready for those Wildcats. The Bulldogs dominated the entire game. Russell Davis and Bryan Marksteiner didn't allow any balls to pass them in net. The offense had 5 goals combined. Mike Topel had a hat trick; Sean Walsh had a goal and 3 assists and Adam Chase had 1 goal and 1 assist. The hustling halfbacks had a combined score of 5 goals also. Robby Lovaglio had 2 goals; Chris Salvage had 1 goal and Bobby Zetterberg had 2 goals. Joe Paciullo had a great game at halfback giving the Wildcats a lot of pressure. The demolition defense of T. J. Fabis, Sean Lehosky, Joe Reyes, Dennis Rochon, Brian Beissel and Sean Thomson played a great game stopping Wisdom in their tracks. Coach Pagliari states, "I have a lot of talent on this team. We have to come together and work as a team. If the players communicate and work as a team we will have a great season. I'm looking forward to helping these players become even better than they already are."
